I
realize that I haven’t posted anything for a little while. This is NOT because
I don’t have anything to say; after all, people that know me will tell you that
I ALWAYS have something to say. The reason I haven’t posted is because this
past week I have been preparing for the 21st birthday, which was
February 13, then I caught a cold from my daughter…
I am
still not feeling the best, but thought that I should write something,
anything. So, here goes.
There once was a man from
Nantucket
Who found himself in a bucket
When asked how he got there
He said with a flair
‘I don’t know but I really should
shuck it!’
I wonder why all the limericks
that I know it is always a man from Nantucket. Is there something about
Nantucket that makes those people special? Why not a man from Portland, or NYC,
or even Boise? What is so special about Nantucket? Where is Nantucket?
I googled Nantucket and found out
that the town of Nantucket is on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. That
explains a lot. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against anyone that lives in
New England but I have found that certain people from certain states have an
attitude of being better than anyone else. Massachusetts is one of the first
thirteen colonies and they do think that they are better than anyone, unlike
the people from Portland, Maine that are some of the most helpful, friendly
people in the country.
I have a sister that lives in
Connecticut, she likes it there. I think that Connecticut is far too close to
New York City for me. Which brings me to the state of New York which is not all
NYC like most people think. Don’t tell me that when you hear someone say, “New
York,” you don’t think New York City… I know better than that. New York, the
state, is huge and is a beautiful state, as long as you are, as they say,
UPSTATE. Upstate New York encompasses towns like Albany, Schenectady, Syracuse,
Buffalo and several others that are MUCH better to visit than New York City.
You may be wondering how I would
know anything at all about New England. Well, I am a truck driver. I used to
drive over the road so I have been in every state in the continental United States.
Kinda like that song “I Been Everywhere.” The worst part of that is even though
I have been in all the lower 48, there are very few of them that I spent any
time in. That is one of the downfalls of commercial driving… no time to enjoy
the travelling.
Wow, once again I get on the
soapbox and forget what I’m talking about and go off on a tangent to places unknown.
I started out with Nantucket. What I found out was this: Nantucket is 30 miles
south of Cape Cod, 105.3 square miles; elevation is 30 feet above sea level and
has a population of a little over 10,000. I did happen to see that there are at
least 71 things to do in Nantucket (which beats the crap out of the four things
that you can do in Chariton, Iowa). Since it is an island you are surrounded by
water that is really cold (after all, the North Atlantic isn’t known for being
the best swimming temp) and in the winter you get those Nor’Easters that will
make you wish you were in Juneau.
So, I really don’t see what is so
special about Nantucket that all those limericks have to have some guy that is
from there. Maybe it isn’t so much that the guy LIVES in Nantucket but that he
USED to live there and he left because it wasn’t the best place to be. If you
look at them they do always say, “a man FROM Nantucket” not ‘living in
Nantucket.” Maybe he now lives in Boise, Glenwood Springs or even Orlando. I
would choose Orlando, much warmer and no snow.
